Possible April Fools Joke?

With tomorrow being the first of April, known as ‘April Fools Day’, it is widely speculated that the so called ‘Conficker Worm’ will be unleashed. Apparently this worm has been detected for at least a year now, and that it has just been going onto peoples computers and basically remaining dormant. It is initially executed when a file is executed, but after that it seems there is no other activity.

It is said that tomorrow,April 1st, the worm will come out of its long sleep and begin to scan through 50,000 sites and then download information from them, it is not known what will be done with this information but people are coming up with many different theories. The most realistic one is that it will try to conflict with your system and make performance suffer as a result.

It has been 2 years now since the last major worm was unleashed throughout the internet, known as the ‘Storm Worm‘, it mainly attacked private computers, this spread rapidly through an e-mail that was in circulation that warned about a recent weather disaster, it said “230 dead as storm batters Europe”. The Storm Worm was re-released last year (2008) on April fools day and once again infected more computers.

So obviously there is people thinking a new worm this April fools day could be released. Microsoft has even released information on the Conficker Worm, the most recent release of this worm was on march 4th 2009, which is not too long ago. Microsoft has information on how to remove the infection on there site and how to further prevent this from happening, the Alert Level is set to Severe on this worm.

I personally think that this is getting blown way out of proportion and is most likely another joke, people probably just picked April 1st as the possible release date due to the fact of it being April fools day.

Sure we will soon find out if it is all a load of rubbish or not, all we have to do is wait until tomorrow!
