Error on my blog last night

Posted by: Sean | Posted on: September 6th, 2009 | 2 Comments

Last night i was just about to start to write a blog post and then when i went to my site to write it, i could not access my site! For some reason there was an error on my site, it displayed a white page saying: HTTP Error 500 - Internal server error, after looking about the internet for what this exact error is, it turns out that it is nothing to do with client-side so therefore it was out of my control on how to fix it. 2009-09-05_001123 In order to find out what exactly caused my site to crash last night i would have to contact my hosting account holders (Dreamhost) and would have to ask them to inspect the log, however i reckon it would take too long to get them to do this so, for now i will leave it, however it it does happen again i will most certainly be get in touch with them. The funny thing is that this blog is on a server with a few of my other sites and only this one went down, my Newmovies.ie site was still working and so was SeanLucas.com and a few others, i wonder why just this site failed? If you want to know more about the error 500, go to this site, it is where i read about the internal server error 500 ;) .

Should I Go, Or Should I Stay?

My blog here is currently hosted on Lunarpages servers and my hosting account expires now at the beginning of next month. In order to renew my hosting account there it would cost me $107.40 (€76.53) which is a ridiculas amount to have to pay for one year’s hosting, in my opinion. I decided to have a quick look on the Lunarpages site to see what their current rate is for customers now, and it is so much better than what they are offering me!

Now you can get a full years hosting with them for only $59.40 (€42.33), that is almost half the price they are trying to get off me! So I think that it would be a good idea to leave Lunarpages, I have got another hosting account with Dreamhost which only cost me $9.24 (€6.96) for a full year, now obviously that is not their usual yearly cost, but I got that when they were having a deal.

My point is here why should I pay for another years hosting when I could just simply export all my databases from Lunarpages and then Import them all into Dreamhost then I could just transfer my Domains Nameservers over to Dreamhost. That way I could have a full years hosting with Dreamhost for virtually nothing, since I have already bought it.

I think that it would not hurt Lunarpages to look after their current customers before looking for new ones. They could offer their current customers a discount on their next year’s hosting that would at least match their current offer they are offering to new customers!

I still have not fully made my mind up yet if I should switch, but it is likely that I will.  I have a few more days to decide before my hosting expires, then I will send off the e-mail cancelling my account if I choose to go ahead. Sure my websites might go down for a few hours, but it will be worth it to save me spending another $107.40! :o

Now I Have Two Servers

This week I decided I would take up the great offer that dreamhost are offering, if you sign up with them using the coupon code '777' then you will receive a full years hosting with unlimited bandwidth and disk space for only €6.96 ($9.24). That is a really good offer and one that I could not pass by.

So as it stands now I have two servers with two different hosting providers, this one I am currently using is Lunarpages and then the new one I am going to be switching too (once my current hosting period ends with lunarpages) which is the DreamHost one.

I figured, why should I pay for a renewal of my lunarpages account when I can get a full years subscription with another hosting company with a saving of over 90%. If I like the service I get from DreamHost then I will consider staying with them for another year when it comes to the time for renewal again. Who know by that time there could be another offer out and I might switch, why pay more for a service you can get somewhere else for a fraction of the price and that is potentially better than the current one you are using.

The funny thing is that dreamhost had initially set this offer as a one day thing, but everyday they seem to extend it to another day! They must be making a killing with this offer. Great way to get new customers, it certainly worked with me!
