Week of holidays over now

Posted by: Sean | Posted on: September 21st, 2009 | 1 Comments

For the past week i have had no work :D . It was great, usually when i have time off work, it would go past really fast. But for some reason this past week that i was off went slow. It seems like such a long time since i was at work!

Although i have not made a lot of posts during this past week, i only actually made one, i still have been online doing a few things. I have being working on a few bits for other sites i own.

A site i am trying to get launched for next year about tv-shows, i have been working on how i am going to go about adding content as well as sorting out a decent design, which i think i have finally settled on.

Also this week i have been working on building a website for a local electrician, this is my second site that i have built for someone other than myself. Now i have clients! :D .

A few months ago i was going to get a move on with changing a music video / entertainment site that i was working on, The Entertainment Clam, I made a start then soon lost interest with it.

The site did receive a fair bit of traffic, but working with that site is fairly awkward. This week i found out that a new version of the site's software has been released, so i have now begun to get more interest in the site again and i am thinking of upgrading to the new software.

It would be great to find an open source alternative instead of paying for this software, i have found one or two of interest but i current hosting company does not support all the requirement, so i might look around and send off some e-mails to other hosting companies to see if they can or will host it :D, it is worth the try anyway.

I would like to get hosting here in Ireland, i have been looking at a few hosting providers and they are actually very competitive with American hosting company's, on such company is Blacknight.

I have also been working on a new layout for this blog, it seems like i am always changing it but i am not 100% happy with it just yet, the next version will be much much brighter, i have already settled on a layout, but there are a lot of tweaks to sort out with it.

Over the next few days i will have a few reviews of some products i bought recently including a netbook amongst other things.

Dreamweaver – getting to grips

Currently i have a fair bit of website work lined up. I really like getting work like this; it gives me a chance to get to grips with what i have learned from college or what i have learned by myself.

There is no point going to college and not trying to continue to progress your knowledge while you are off on holidays. Now that i will be starting back at college next week, i will have website code fresh in my head, so i will be able to get to grips with anything new that we learn this year.

The work i have been doing throughout the summer and still now requires me to use the likes of Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I never really used these programs too much until only recently and i really do like them.

I find that the more i use them, i seem to find more and more things that can be done with them that makes life easier when editing a website, especially if you have to make a huge gallery for a site, the template feature works great there :D .

Gravatar – Do You Have One?

Posted by: Sean | Posted on: July 26th, 2009 | 0 Comments

On many sites nowadays, especially on blogs, whenever you leave a comment a little picture will display in a small square beside your comment. This is known as a gravatar.

A gravatar is a little picture that represents you on the web. It is a simple picture that you can choose to show who you are. It is similar to if you are on a social networking site such as twitter, you will have a profile picture to show who you are.

gravatars

The way a gravatar works is very simple, you simply go to the Gravatar website here, and then click on sign up. All they ask for is your e-mail address!

So why do they only ask for your e-mail address? Basically that is the only thing they need to have your image follow you on the web. So how does it work? Whenever you are on a site that has the gravatar feature on it, such as this site :D ,  when you leave a comment, it will ask for your e-mail address. By entering your e-mail address into that comment box it then checks to see if you are a gravatar member and if you are it will pull down your image that you chose and then display it next to your comment.

It is really simple and it will give a more personal touch to your comment. On some sites if you do not have a gravatar it just shows the gravatar logo, on my blog here if you do not have your own gravatar, a little cartoon character will show :D .

So go on, get yourself a Gravatar!
